GOLDENDALE - Ethan Tonnemaker won the mile and two-mile, and Katelyn Peterson won two of her four events Friday at the South Central A Conference track and field meet to lead Royal and Wahluke, respectively, to state this weekend.

The state meet will be held at Eastern Washington University in Cheney on Friday and Saturday. The top eight placers in each event will take home medals.

Tonnemaker ran easy in both races, taking the 1600 in 4:47.09 and the 3200 in 10:26.04. He won the first race by 30 meters and the second by more than 100. Both times were way off his personal bests.

"He was saving himself," coach Scott Sandberg said. 

Tonnemaker has been struggling with  his health the last month. First he sprained an ankle. Then he caught a cold that lingered for 10 days.

"I held him out for a couple of weeks," Sandberg said.

Comparing times around the state, Tonnemaker ranks 11th in the 1600 and 20 in the 3200. But Sandberg believes he can medal at state in both races.

Tonnemaker owns the school records in the 1600 and 3200 at 4:35 and 10:02. He set the mile record in the first meet of the spring at Yakima running against boys from Eisenhower and other 4A schools.

"He is a competitive runner, and there wasn't much competition in the SCAC this year," Sandberg said.

Tonnemaker will lead a group of 10 Royal athletes to state. Some qualified individually and others in relays.

The big winner among that group was Laddie Goroski in the 300 hurdles. His winning time of 41.60 is a new school record.

"He ran his best race ever," Sandberg said.

The big news, once again, for Wahluke was the sophomore Peterson in girls competition. She qualified for state four times.

Peterson won the 400 with a time of 1:03.46 and the long jump with a leap of 15-11. She was second in the 200 in 27.57, just .34 out of first. And she was second in the triple jump at 32-11.75, with the winner at 33-1.25.

"She has a chance to medal in both jumps," coach Brock Anderson said. "But the way she's been going lately, I wouldn't bet against her in anything."

Peterson's competition in the long jump came from Royal's Tonya Iverson. Iverson topped out at 15-6.25 for second place and a ticket to state.
