Whalen in the hunt of 2A finals

SPANAWAY - Ephrata's Andrew Whalen shot a first round of 79 at the Classic Golf Course in Spanaway and found himself tied for 11th with five other golfers at the Class 2A state finals which began yesterday.
Ryan Wallen of Blaine leads the field with a score of 73.
Sam Para of Othello finished up his first day with a score of 80 and a tie for 17th place.
Fellow Huskie, Jared Kummer, shot an 81, to give the Othello team two golfers to make the cut.
Trevor Salsbury's 96 was not enough to give Othello a third qualifier for Wednesday.
Whalen's teammate, Mattias Dilling also advanced on to a second day of action with a first round score of 85.
