Several public ceremonies will be held on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.
Meanwhile, five local restaurants will feed veterans a free meal on the holiday.
Reservations are being taken at the following restaurants and numbers:
* Jimmy's Down the Street, 7-10 a.m., Scarlet Jordan, 651-3789;
* Taco Time, Coeur d'Alene, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Julie Bailey, 651-0334;
* Michael D's, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Patti Leach, 755-0415;
* KC's Breakfast Club, Post Falls, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Ed O'Hara, 818-1349; and
* Kelly's Pub, Coeur d'Alene, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Angela Couch, 651-1359.
Only veterans eat for free and proof of military service is required. Last year 67 veterans were fed a free meal.
Donations, which will be given to the participating restaurants to help defray the cost, are being sought. About $700 has been raised.
Tax-deductible donations can be made out to VFW Post 889 with "Veterans Lunch" in the memo and mailed to event organizer Eric Soles at 211 E. Coeur d'Alene Ave., Suite 104, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83814 or organizer Patti Leach at 3518 N. Government Way, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83815. Soles and Leach are Edward Jones agents.
Memorial Day ceremonies include:
* COEUR d'ALENE - There will be a ringing of the Third Street bell at 9 a.m. downtown, followed by a laying of a wreath in the water by VFW Post 889 and American Legion 14.
There will be ceremonies at St. Thomas Cemetery at 10 a.m. and at Forest Cemetery near the Civil War statue at 11 a.m.
The Marine Corps League Pappy Boyington Detachment 966 will provide a color guard, rifle squad and wreath bearers at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens at 2 p.m. The invited speaker is Vaughn Ward, Lt. Col.-USMC Reserve, and CEO of Northwest Specialty Hospital.
* POST FALLS - Services will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, 2834 N. Spokane St., at 11 a.m. State Rep. Bob Nonini, R-Coeur d'Alene, is the keynote speaker. Events include a color guard by American Legion Post 143, laying of wreaths and words from Mayor Clay Larkin.
* HAYDEN - A ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at the Robert J. Gordon Veterans Memorial Plaza at City Hall featuring the Albeni Pipe and Drum Corps. Government Way from Orchard to Honeysuckle will be closed from 10:45 a.m. to noon. The city of Hayden's Veteran Affairs Committee will also hold a wreath-laying ceremony at Honeysuckle Beach at 10 a.m.
* RATHDRUM - The VFW will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. at Pinegrove Cemetery. After the services, the VFW Auxiliary will offer soup and desserts at the Lions Club. At noon, the VFW will be handing out poppies at Stein's IGA.
* ATHOL - American Legion Post 149 will hold a ceremony at 9 a.m. at the post on Highway 54. Another ceremony will be held at noon at the Athol Cemetery.
* PLUMMER - The American Legion and the Coeur d'Alene Tribe will hold a ceremony at the tribe's Veterans Memorial at the trailhead of The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes at 9:30 a.m.
