If this is it for the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen class AA American Legion baseball team at McEuen Field - could somebody please tell them so?
After a vote to turn their current home into a city park, this 2011 season of baseball by the lake could be the final one for the program at McEuen Field.
"We've got a lot of home games," Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. "If this is the last year, we hope everyone gets a chance to have at least one experience to see what it's like playing at McEuen Field."
While the vote was handed down Tuesday, the team is still in the dark on what lies next.
"The city has made a commitment to get us somewhere," Duman said. "We're kind of hoping that's what happens. For us it's kind of bittersweet. The hardest part is we know it's not the greatest field, but the atmosphere is great. All the teams that come here want to play at McEuen. There's something about being there and playing in that environment."
Duman added that one of Tuesday's resolutions was they weren't going to move the baseball team or the boat ramp until an alternative site was in place.
"It's interesting to see how this will play out," Duman said. "It kind of tells us they need to get some ducks in a row before we're off."
Coeur d'Alene opens the season today at the Missoula Mavericks Memorial Day tournament, where the Lums will face the Glacier Twins at 2 p.m. (PDT). They will also face the Helena Senators and Bozeman Bucks on Sunday before playing host Missoula on Monday.
Returning to the Lumbermen pitching rotation this season will be Jason Pattis, Grant Curtis, Pete Hoffman, Derek Priano and Ransom Storm. Coeur d'Alene High pitcher Colin Comack joins the Lumbermen program this season.
"Hopefully our pitching will be a strength for us," Duman said. "We're playing a lot of games this year - if we don't get rained out. We should be solid as the season goes on, but it will take a while to get our arms where they need to be."
Kaleb DeHaas and Joe Roletto will share the catching duties for Coeur d’Alene.
Offensively, Duman thinks they could have the ability to score some runs as well.
“We had a hitting practice the other day,” Duman said. “We could make some noise this year.”
Around the infield will be a platoon of Curtis and Matt Cade at first base; Comack and Christian Mayfield at second; Mitch Bevacqua at shortstop and Hoffman and Leif Krapas at third.
Roaming the outfield will be Taylor Combo, Priano, Krapas, Garrett Cabeza, Pattis and Chad Nyquist.
Coeur d’Alene has added a second under-16 team in the Lumberjacks, who will play their home games at Coeur d’Alene High. They join the Lakers, who play at Lake City High, in a league out of the Spokane area. Coeur d’Alene now has four Legion teams, including the class A Loggers.
“We’ve been attempting to expand for years, but we made a strong commitment to get it done this year,” Duman said. “We started by getting the high school coaches involved. Hopefully by doing that, we’ll have increased the amount of players coming to the Lumbermen by one-third.”
Sandpoint returns to class AA this year for the first time since 2007, giving the North Idaho League seven teams. The Area A (district) tournament is July 21-24 at Trail, British Columbia. The top two teams advance to state July 26-31 at Twin Falls.
Coeur d’Alene will host the Border Wars tournament next weekend, the Best of the Northwest tourney June 22-26 and the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Wood Bat tournament on Fourth of July weekend.
