Lums survive batty opener
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 13 years, 11 months AGO
MISSOULA, Mont. - Grant Curtis' two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Coeur d'Alene the lead to stay, and the Lumbermen overcame a bat flap early in the game and opened its season Saturday with an 11-9 victory over the Glacier Twins from Whitefish, Mont., at the Dale Dahlgren Memorial Day Tournament.
Curtis' homer put the class AA Lums ahead 10-9. Colin Comack, who hit a three-run double in the fourth, closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
After Chad Nyquist hit a two-run double in the first inning, umpires checked his bat and ruled it illegal, and took the two runs off the board. In advance of next year, when high school and Legion teams will have to use less-lively bats (as the colleges have done this year), Montana has decided to outlaw composite bats this year. That left the Lums with only three legal (solid alloy) bats that they could use in this tournament.
"We were hoping we didn't have to use it as an excuse," Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. "And our kids stepped up; four or five of them were using bats they usually don't."
Duman had praise for the defense of shortstop Mitch Bevacqua and second baseman Colin Comack, and said center fielder Jason Pattis made two nice catches in the outfield, one an over-the-shoulder grab of a shot to the 400-foot mark in dead center.
Coeur d'Alene plays the Helena Senators today at 9 a.m. PDT and the Bozeman Bucks at 11:30 a.m.
