MISSOULA, Mont. - The Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen, which opened their season this weekend at the Dale Dahlgren Memorial Day Tournament, are a "work in progress," Lums coach Lloyd Duman said.

Coeur d'Alene reached the tournament championship game for the first time in many years, but a 10-2 loss to the Missoula Mavericks - highlighted by a six-run fourth inning - showed the Lums what they need to work on.

"We haven't practiced bunt coverages, and they (the Mavericks) noticed it really quick," Duman said. "It's frustrating, but I would have done the same thing. We practiced our bunt coverages on a tennis court before we went over (to Missoula), and that's all."

Jason Pattis and Kaleb DeHaas had RBI singles for the Lums.

Earlier, the teams met in the finale of round-robin play - knowing they were going to face each other again in the title game. Missoula won 9-1.

"The fact we got there (to the title game) was icing on the cake; we got an extra game," Duman said.

Coeur d'Alene plays host to the Spokane Cannons and Cranbrook on Friday at McEuen Field to open the Battle of the Borders tournament.

Loggers second at

Missoula tourney

MISSOULA, Mont. - Coeur d'Alene reached the championship game of the class A version of the tournament, falling 7-3 to the Helena Representatives in a five-inning, rain-shortened game.

Earlier Monday, Mark Nuttleman pitched a two-hit shutout and Sam Fortis had three hits as the Loggers beat Helena 6-0.

Coeur d'Alene went 3-2 in the tourney, which served as the Loggers' season opener.

"All the teams we played have been playing for a month already, so it was good to see our kids compete and make it to the championship game," Loggers coach Tom Barlow said. "The kids showed a ton of resilience, especially in our first game against the Glacier Twins where we came back in the bottom of the seventh down three runs to win the game."

The Loggers play host to Mead on Thursday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at McEuen Field.
