Florence Ann Mengelkoch Westmeyer, 96, passed away Oct. 26, 2011, in Napa, Calif. She was born Dec. 18, 1914, in Medicine Lake, Minn.
She was the fifth of six children of Elizabeth and Mathias Mengelkoch. The family later moved to a farm near Wayzata, Minn. Florence attended Holy Name School which was staffed by the Benedictine Sisters of Duluth, Minn. She attended high school and college at St. Scholastica's in Duluth where her sister, Sister Mary Xavier, was a member of the Benedictine order. After graduating from college Florence taught in schools in Minnesota, Oregon and Washington.
In 1950 she married Laurence Regan who passed away that same year. In 1951 she married Francis Thomas Westmeyer, who had recently lost his wife, Laura Anna Dierker Westmeyer, to cancer. In 1954 the family moved to Greenville, Pa., until their retirement in 1976. Following their retirement Frank and Florence moved to Coeur d'Alene. Frank T.Westmeyer preceded Florence in death in 1999.
Florence is survived by three step-children: Virginia Rosen of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., Robert T. Westmeyer of Napa, Calif., and Frank C. Westmeyer, M.D., of Virginia Beach, Va. Florence is also survived by six grandhildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery. Yates Funeral Homes has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements.
In lieu of flowers at her funeral Florence requested that donations be made to the St. Pius X Building Fund, Coeur d'Alene.
