• AMERICAN LEAGUE

CC Sabathia decided to stay with the New York Yankees rather than test the free-agent market, agreeing Monday to a new deal that adds $30 million to his existing contract and will pay $122 million over the next five years.

The 31-year-old left-hander had until midnight to opt out of his current agreement, which had $92 million remaining over the next four years in $23 million annual salaries.

• The Seattle Mariners released former closer David Aardsma after Aardsma declined to be outrighted and became a free agent.

The Mariners also removed center fielder Franklin Gutierrez and catcher Adam Moore from the 60-day disabled list. Right-handed reliever Jeff Gray was also claimed off waivers by the Minnesota Twins.

• The Cleveland Indians have acquired pitcher Derek Lowe from Atlanta for minor league pitcher Chris Jones, a low-risk move to bolster their starting rotation.

• The Texas Rangers piced up the 2012 club option for right-hander Colby Lewis.

• The Tampa Bay Rays have exercised their $7.5 million contract option for 2012 on pitcher James Shields.

• The Cleveland Indians declined Grady Sizemore's $9 million contract option for 2012, making the injury-plagued three-time All-Star center fielder eligible for free agency.

• NATIONAL LEAGUE

Josh Byrnes is a general manager again under Jeff Moorad, this time in San Diego instead of Arizona, and with a five-year contract rather than one for eight years.

The Padres introduced Byrnes five days after it was announced that Jed Hoyer was leaving San Diego to become GM of the Chicago Cubs under Theo Epstein.

• Washington announced they were picking up the managerial option for Davey Johnson for next season.

• Jason Giambi and the Colorado Rockies have exercised their mutual option on his $1 million contract for 2012.

• The Chicago Cubs have exercised their side of a $16 million mutual contract option on third baseman Aramis Ramirez.

Football

Nevada quarterback Cody Fajardo, Hawaii linebacker Aaron Brown and Hawaii placekicker Kenton Chun were named the Western Athletic Conference offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively.

Brown, a senior, had a team-high nine tackles (5 solo), including 1.5 for a loss, and an interception in the win at Idaho.

• Montana quarterback Jordan Johnson, who tied a school record with six touchdown passes, was named the Big Sky Conference offensive player of the week.

Portland State linebacker Joel Sisler was named the defensive player of the week while PSU kicker Zach Brown earned special teams honors.

Basketball

Miami Heat owner Micky Arison has been fined an undisclosed amount by the NBA, three days after he made references to the locked-out league's ongoing collective bargaining process on his Twitter account.

Arison posted several tweets Friday night, including a reply to someone who referred to those involved with the lockout as "greedy ... pigs." Arison replied by saying "Honestly u r barking at the wrong owner."

That tweet was deleted a short time later.

Hockey

Rangers 5, Sharks 2: Ryan Callahan scored twice in New York's three-goal second period, and host New York beat San Jose.

Jets 4, Panthers 3, SO: At Sunrise, Fla., Andrew Ladd and Kyle Wellwood each scored goals in a shootout and Winnipeg beat Florida.

Blackhawks 5, Predators 4, OT: Viktor Stalberg scored in overtime to lift Chicago at Nashville.
