SPOKANE - The Moses Lake cross country teams performed well at the CBBN/GSL Regional Championships at Wandermere Golf Course Saturday, but came up shy of their goal of sending runners to state.

"It was perfect weather for a cross-country race and the course was well groomed," coach Loren Childers said. "The girls raced first and the Lady Chiefs fought hard, but in the end both team and individual state qualifiers fell short."

Childers said the girls team raced well as a whole, with the pack being lead once again by junior Julia Sheremet.

"Her time of 20:54 was the fastest by a female Chief runner on a 5k course all year," he said. "Hannah Marsh was close behind finishing in 21:04. The remaining three runners ran great races and finished their seasons with personal bests."

Gloria Saucedo, Childers said, saw the biggest improvement with a final time of 21:43, nearly a minute faster than her previous 5k time this year.

The boys facing tough competition from six of the top 10 ranked schools in the state, were looking to place in the top 15 and move on to the big show. Hayden Wise was in the mix for most of the race.

"Coming down he came up a bit short and placed 23rd overall with a time of 16:46, merely 22 seconds off of a state qualifying spot," Childers said. "Our No. 2 two runner, freshman Justin Johnson, finished 34th at 17:01. He was the fastest freshmen in the entire region."

Robert Warren (17:29), Alek Schwiesow (17:48) and Nick Tripp (18:09) rounded off the scoring for the Chiefs.

"Our season ended on Saturday short of a few goals, but still a very successful season," Childers said. "We broke many of our own team records and have lots of talented runners returning next year. We also have several of the fastest freshmen in the state, so be on the lookout for more exciting running news in the future."
