BOISE - It was a feat so cool, they threw the coach in the pool.
Lake City, behind two individual champions in three events and two second-place finishes in relay events, won its first boys state swimming title at the Boise City Aquatics Center on Saturday, edging Moscow by 10 points.
"It was a complete team effort today," Lake City coach Jonathan Siegler said. "We knew it was going to be close like districts. I was a nervous wreck all the way through."
After the Lake City boys had received their championship trophy, they threw Siegler in the pool to celebrate the title.
"He knew it was coming," said Lake City senior captain Seth Helbling. "We were standing on the podium and he knew it was coming. It was a good feeling to see him in the water. I think he actually enjoyed it."
Junior Joe Loftus successfully defended his title in the 100-yard butterfly in 51.10 seconds and also won the 100 backstroke for Lake City in 50.65.
“It was fun to do it again,” Loftus said. “It’s always good to get the state title back, but scoring points for the team was good. It was a good feeling to come away with a state team title.”
Sophomore Bryce Kananowicz won the 200 individual medley and was second in the 500 freestyle for Lake City. Kananowicz set a state meet record in the individual medley in 1:54.21, surpassing the mark set by former Lake City standout Mason Shaw in 2007 (1:54.90).
“It was pretty exciting,” said Kananowicz of his 200 win. “I was happy I could do that and help my teammates win a state title. This feels absolutely amazing and it’s great to share this with these guys. We’ve never won a state title in 17 years, so it feels great to help bring them a state championship.”
“It was a phenomenal day,” said Helbling of the relay teams. “Our relays were where the points were at today. We got pumped up and pulled through to get second.”
Coeur d’Alene’s boys 200 freestyle relay team of Dyson Savage, Kade Hern, Gus Koch and Ethan Cordes won in 1:33.40. The Vikings finished third, three points behind Moscow.
Post Falls freshman Suzanne de Tar finished second in the 200 freestyle 2:06.10, senior Anatasia de Tar was second in the 50 freestyle in 24.90 for the Trojans, who finished fifth in the girls team standings with 135 points, followed by Lake City in fifth with 134 points.
