POST FALLS - A standoff between law enforcement officers and a reportedly suicidal man wanted on a felony probation violation ended peacefully Sunday after six hours of negotiation.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office said it arrested Matthew Couture, 44, at 317 S. Ross Point Road in Post Falls around noon after Couture had barricaded himself in the basement of the home and armed himself with a large butcher knife, threatening to kill himself.

The incident was initially reported around 5:30 a.m. after Couture and his mother engaged in a verbal dispute.

After authorities arrived, Couture shut himself in the bottom level of the home, and deputies subsequently learned that Couture was wanted in California on a felony probation violation warrant.

After more than six hours of negotiating, Couture gave up to SWAT team members, authorities said in a press release, and was taken into custody without further incident. No one was injured.

Couture has a criminal history that includes arrests for domestic batteries and aggravated assault, according to the sheriff's office. He was booked into the Kootenai County jail pending extradition proceedings.
