Time to rock at the library

POST FALLS - The Post Falls Library is a magnet for middle school students after school.
And the library's foundation wants to keep it that way by offering them and others more places to park their bikes and skateboards.
The foundation will hold Rockin' Out at the Library, a Guitar Hero contest open to students in grades 6-12, on Saturday from 5-8 p.m. at the library, 821 N. Spokane St.
"With an increase in young visitors to the library, the need for secure and safe storage for bikes and skateboards was brought to the foundation's attention this summer," said Jame Davis, a foundation board member. "Our goal is to be able to install new bike racks that can accommodate 15 to 20 additional bikes."
The foundation is working with River City Fabrication to create an artistic rack. The estimated cost for the project is between $2,000 and $2,500. There will be sponsorship opportunities in the future to assist with the funding.
Rich Wallace, the foundation's fundraising chair, said the library's 12-slot bike rack can't keep up with the demand. When the new Boys and Girls Club is built next door, there will be even more bikes, he said.
"I hope everybody comes, brings their kids and helps us raise the money," Wallace said.
Excavation and concrete to enlarge the existing bike parking area by about 140 square feet for the rack will also be needed. An estimate on that part of the project hasn't been determined.
"We'll be looking for donations for concrete and labor when we get to that point," said Anne Abrams of the Community Library Network, which the Post Falls facility is a part of.
The pre-registration deadline for the Guitar Hero contest is Thursday. The entry fee is $10, which includes a T-shirt. Registration forms are at the library or www.communitylibrary.net/postfalls.
Walk-ins are welcome if there are available slots.
There will be Medium, Hard and Expert divisions. All the equipment to perform will be provided.
Prizes include a Kindle, an e-book reader that enables users to shop for, download, browse and read e-books, newspapers and other digital media, and a laptop computer.
All ages are invited to watch the contest for free.
There will be concessions, including pizza, cupcakes, candy, soda and coffee. The Post Falls Lions Club will have its popcorn and cotton candy machines.
The Post Falls High cheerleaders will serve refreshments and DECA students will help with the set up.
Coeur d'Alene/Post Falls Press Columnist Kerri Thoreson will emcee the event.
