Older adults have the highest economic advantage over young adults seen in the nation's history, according to Pew Research Center analysis of U.S. Census data.
In 2009, a household headed by an adult 65 or older had a net worth of $170,494, while a houshold headed by an individual 35 or younger has a net worth of $3,662.
That shows a 47:1 wealth gap, dramatically higher than the 10:1 gap in 1984.
According to Pew analysis, the gap has existed for decades, but has likely been widened by changes in labor and housing markets, couples marrying later, delayed retirement and the current recession.
