The Chiefs keeper Heidi Palmer makes one of her 10 saves in the regional soccer match against Central Valley Saturday at Lions Field.

MOSES LAKE - The Moses Lake High School girls soccer team suffered a heart-breaking 1-0 loss to Central Valley at Lions Field Saturday.

The Chiefs gave it everything they had, but it wasn't enough, as the Bears shut the door on their dreams of a state playoff run.

"The girls really played their hearts out," coach Ric Char said. "Unfortunately we didn't get a lot of opportunities to get our offense going."

The Central Valley defense had a lot to do with that, as they held two of the Big Nine leading scores, Caylah Lunning and Alysha Overland, in check the entire match.

"We knew this was going to be a low scoring game," Char said. "CV has only allowed five or six goals all year. My hats off to them."

Both teams were held off the board in the first 27 minutes of the match, as a couple saves by the Chiefs keeper Heidi Palmer and the Bears Jessie Pfeiffer, and several shots on goal by both teams hit the crossbar.

But Central Valley's Paige Ellingson found the back of the Chiefs net at the 30 seconds later to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

Central Valley had a chance to make it 2-0 on a penalty kick with 14 minutes to go before intermission, but the ball sailed over the crossbar, much to the dismay of the visiting crowd.

Alysha Overland had two chances to tie the match and could've have given the Chiefs the lead, but one of her two shots on goal in the final minutes of the first half hit the crossbar and the other found the outstretched hands of a diving Pfeiffer to block an apparent score.

Defense and missed scoring opportunities was the name of the game in the second half of play for both teams had balls bounced of goal posts and miss-handled balls on breakaways.

Things got physical as well as two yellow cards, one each to the Chiefs and Bears were handed out in the final three minutes of play.

Although the team goal of making it to state fell short with the loss, the Chiefs, Char said, have a lot to be proud of.

"We had a great season. We won the district championships and no other team in the history of the program has done that," he said. "It's unfortunate the season has to end on a losing note, but every team's does unless you are state champion."

Seven seniors, five of which are starters on the team will be lost to graduation, but Char said he's expecting great things from the Chiefs next season.

"We are losing some good leadership on the team, so the girls coming up will have some big shoes to fill, he said. "But the future looks bright as we have sophomore Caylah Lunning, the CBBN Play of the Year, and freshman phenom Alysha Overland coming back. We have a talented group of girls who've bonded well and it really makes my job easy."

The Chiefs Lunning was named co-Player of the Year in the CBBN. She was also honored as a member of the All-Big Nine at the forward position.

Kelsie Grant was named All-Big Nine Midfielder, Kimmi Bakker and Abby Stones were named All-Big Nine defenders, and Ric Char was named Coach of the Year.

Forward Alysha Overland was named Second Team All-Big Nine and Heidi Palmer was honored as Second Team All-Big Nine goalkeeper.
