Writers Corner for November 11, 2011

HEROES NEVER DIE

I stand with pride and honor

as our grand old flag goes by

draped over the coffins

beneath a cloudless sky.

To keep our country free

each one gave up their life.

The price they had to pay

was worth any sacrifice.

We put flowers on their graves

and pray loved ones understand.

To fall in battle, strong and brave,

no life could be so grand.

I put my handkerchief away;

there was no need to cry.

I saluted each and every one

for heroes never die.

The days of laughter are no more

and sometimes tears will fall,

but the lives their heroes lived

are examples to us all

when bands stop their marching songs

and "Taps" begins to play.

SPECIAL ARMISTICE DAY ANNIVERSARY

Back in year 2000, I asked my daughter Joanie and her fiance Bryan why they chose to be married on Armistice Day.

They replied, "So we would never forget our important date, and it would always remind us to remember the brave and valorous men and women of the military who, through the years, have saved our beautiful United States of America with their own lives."

Letter to my daughter and son-in-law:

The year "11" will not appear again on calendars for 100 years, and the determinacy that makes November 11 so special will have come and gone and be forgotten by the persons who are celebrating Armistice Day in 2111.

And so, dear children, I hasten at this 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, of the 11th year, to wish you a happy 11th wedding anniversary!
