POLSON — With the holiday season fast approaching and everybody thinking about starting their Christmas shopping, Polson Assistant Chief of Police John Stevens wants people to be extra cautious this year when it comes to protecting themselves against vehicle theft.

“With people shopping, they’ve got to make sure their stuff is taken out [of their car],” Stevens said.

While Stevens hasn’t noticed a particular increase in vehicle theft, it’s a continuing problem and one that happens all over town. Stevens noted that there have been a pair of car thefts over the last couple months.

Car burglaries are a specific point of emphasis this time of year because many people don’t do the simple things that can prevent them from becoming victims. The main three things people can do are to take their keys with them, lock their doors and avoid leaving valuables in the car when unattended.

Oftentimes, just hiding valuables in one’s car while leaving the doors unlocked ends badly for people.

“If the doors are unlocked, even if things are hidden, people will rummage around,” Stevens said.

According to Stevens, car thieves walk around with shifty eyes, looking for any chance to unlawfully gain at someone else’s expense.

“It’s a crime of opportunity,” Stevens said.

As fall moves into winter, houses are also targets for thieves looking to make out with other people’s possessions. Stevens reiterated that locking your doors and keeping your eyes peeled for irregular activity are the best ways to defend not just yourself, but your friends and neighbors as well.

“People need to call us if the see something going on,” Stevens said. “They’re our extra eyes. [Call us] at the time of the crime, not the next day, if you suspect something suspicious. We’re open 24/7.”
