Rockin' good time

POST FALLS — The Post Falls Library was rocking on Saturday night.
But that’s OK. Patrons desiring quiet reading areas had long gone home.
Twenty-five students in grades 6-12 competed in Rockin’ Out at the Library, a Guitar Hero contest fundraiser sponsored by the library foundation for a new bike rack at the library to meet growing demand.
Scott Hohman, a Post Falls High student, said it was nice to have a safe, relaxing place for students to help raise funds for an obvious need.
“You can see how happy people can be playing at something like this,” Hohman said. “It gives you a good feeling.”
The event raised about $600, including a $200 donation from Bicycle Sales of Coeur d’Alene.
“It was more about awareness and getting the message out (about the need for the bike rack),” said Jamé Davis, library board member. “People know about it now. The kids were hyped up on cotton candy and had a great time.”
The estimated cost for the rack, which will accommodate an additional 15 to 20 bikes, is between $2,000 and $2,500. There will be sponsorship opportunities to help raise the remaining funds. Excavation and concrete for the rack’s foundation will also be needed.
The library currently has a 12-slot rack.
Demand for bike and skateboard spaces is expected to only increase when the Boys and Girls Club is built next door.
Hohman is treasurer of the PFHS DECA club, which helped set up the event. He said he remembers a need for more bike parking spots at the library when he was in middle school.
“Some places are better than others (for bike racks), but this is one of the only places with enough space for them,” he said.
Hohman finished second in the Hard division to friend Devin Koshney, a former PFHS student who attends University High. The two play in the alternative rock band The Colourflies.
Koshney earned 100 percent while performing to Bon Jovi’s “You Give Love a Bad Name” to win the title and a mini laptop computer. Koshney said he hadn’t played the game for few years, but believes his band experience prevented him from slipping. He believed the contest — in its first year — was well-received.
“It’s a good community event,” he said.
In the Medium division Brayden Menti of Timberlake Junior High took first, and Post Falls Middle School’s Levi Wilkinson was second.
