Scoliosis revisited

We had some great feedback on our scoliosis article from September and I'd like to revisit that topic. A question that arose had to do with scoliosis in the older demographic; those who are already past diagnosis stage and living with some range of scoliosis.

It is important to stress that each spine is different and even though it may be past a preventative phase, it is critical to get your spine assessed by a chiropractor. This allows us to see which areas of your spine are affected, what the progression and severity of curve there is, and how it can be impacting your overall health. From this information we are better able to suggest specific exercises and referrals to build a health-care team that can work with your specific scoliosis.

In people with a history of treated scoliosis, there are often later back and health problems that need to be recognized and addressed; anything from spinal fusion and disk degeneration to arthritic condition of the spine, as well as varying health challenges. There can also be respiratory impairment in people with severe distortions, due to a restrictive chest cavity that is less able to expand and makes it difficult to obtain oxygen.

Apart from having a thorough knowledge of your spine and your scoliosis condition, you should also consider having a regular exercise regime if you don't already. Yoga and/or Pilates is a great choice because it focuses on building muscular strength and flexibility. However, nothing replaces having the structural integrity of your spine assessed and corrected first and foremost!

As always, you should see your chiropractic care provider. Regular adjustments will be affecting change with your physiological systems even if it can't fully correct a scoliotic curve. If you or someone you know is living with scoliosis, we encourage you to find out more about how chiropractic can help change your life and we are happy to help! Chiropractic goes beyond pain

Our bodies are amazing. Think about that statement. As you do, also think about the fact that you probably took a breath, blinked your eyes, moved a limb, moved your head, focused your eyes, digested food, healed a cut, wiggled a toe, salivated and a million other internal operations. Although you were not readily thinking about all of these processes, they were going on without the need for your input. Your brain, while also supplying you with conscious thought, is simultaneously orchestrating a laundry list of functions to keep you alive and well.

As March moves in, the steadfast determination of many people to continue carrying out their New Year's resolutions is no doubt starting to fade. If you are still holding strong to the things you have changed in your life, bravo! If not, well, there's always next year, right?
