ST. IGNATIUS — “We veterans are here today to pay our respects to our fallen comrades. Something we must do. Something we’re honored to do. They deserve no less.”

Those were the carefully-crafted words Mission Valley Honor Guard member J.C. Courville opened his speech with in remembrance of those who pay the ultimate sacrifice to preserve our nation’s freedoms and values.

The Mission Valley Honor Guard, along with the St. Ignatius community, celebrated Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 11 with several speakers paying their respects to America’s bravest men and women.

Held in front of the St. Ignatius Veterans Memorial, the ceremony began with a prayer, followed by Courville’s speech, before the microphone was opened up to members of the public who wished to say a few words.

The ceremony was then finished with a poignant 21-gun salute to recognize those heroic individuals who have served for the United States of America.

The final words of Courville’s speech are important to remember, not just on Veterans Day, but every day.

“Remember, each time you see someone who has served our country, just lean over and say ‘thank you.’ That’s all most people need and in most cases, it will mean more than any medal. Two little words mean a lot.”
