COEUR d'ALENE - Joaquin Calderon won both his matches at 125 pounds as the Cardinals beat Yakima Valley 40-3 and Simon Fraser 36-12 at the Cardinal Duals at Christianson Gymnasium.

"Joaquin wrestled a tight match in the first period," NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said of the Yakima Valley match. "The guys wrestled as well as they have. Even with a couple of injuries, we still did a good job."

Against Simon Fraser, NIC (4-2) won all but one decision in the contested bouts, with Simon Fraser getting two forfeits.

"We're on the road to tomorrow," Whitcomb said. "We had a couple of injuries come up and we didn't want them to turn into major things before the end of the semester. We'll be holding few out tomorrow (Sunday) with a few tweaks here and there. It might be a case of some of the freshmen wearing down before Thanksgiving and need to get some hugs from their moms."

NIC will host the H.U.B. Open today at The H.U.B. in the Spokane Valley starting at 9 a.m.

The tournament will also feature the University of Great Falls, Montana State-Northern, Simon Fraser, Yakima, Southern Oregon and a few wrestlers from Pac-10 Conference squad Oregon State.

"It's shaping up to be a full day of wrestling," Whitcomb said. "It's definitely a good tournament close to home."

The finals are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
