EPHRATA - An October report by the Grant County Health District noted the number of Pertussis cases in the county has risen to 57, with seven cases reported in September.

In addition, 580 contacts have been made regarding the disease that is commonly known as Whooping Cough. Administrator Jeff Ketchel said these contacts are time-consuming and costly.

Ketchel said a new plan for dealing with Pertussis in the schools is under consideration.

In other matters, Ketchel reported that the new owners of the George Truck Stop & Subway are asking for a re-evaluation of their fee situation. It has grown because of inattention to permitting requirements, according to Ketchel.

Ketchel said a food establishment permit is not transferable when an establishment changes hands. The new owners took over in January and had not obtained a new permit as of the Oct. 12 meeting of the GCHD.

Ketchel noted the permit fee doubles when new owners wait more than 30 days. The GCHD asked for additional information before making a decision.

Ketchel reported that Lawrence Farms is in line for receiving a variance that will allow the sale of materials that have been composting since 2003.

Ketchel said the GCHD has received concurrence from the Department of Ecology to issue the variance. He said the site is similar to one that was approved about a year and a half ago.
