His family moved to Eddieville, Iowa, when he was a small child and finally settled in Marshalltown, Calif., at the age of 17. Eddie graduated from Santa Monica High School in the spring of 1941.
He joined the U.S. Navy in August 1941 and did his boot camp in San Diego. He was sent to Pearl Harbor in November where he was aboard the USS New Orleans during the attack at Pearl Harbor. Eddie was injured during the attack but went on and fought in three more engagements. He spent many months recovering and was honorably discharged in April 1942 due to his injuries.
He was married to Mary "Peggy" Anderson on Feb. 2, 1946, and they had three boys, Mark, Craig and Darryl. Eddie owned a motel in Big Pine, Calif., but later they moved back to Los Angeles where he owned and operated Ed's Shell Service Station. In 1972 he moved his family to Coeur d'Alene and purchased S & D Music Vending Company. He sold the business in 1974 and retired.
Eddie married Jane Ann Urbatsch on Nov. 18, 1982, and they spent 29 happy years together. They enjoyed camping, traveling, cruising and playing games with their family and friends. Eddie also enjoyed fishing, tinkering in his garage, woodworking, air shows and snowmobiling.
Eddie was thrilled to attend the 65th anniversary ceremonies of the attack on Pearl Harbor with 15 members of his family. It was a trip of a lifetime being able to share his experience with his grandchildren.
Eddie is survived by his wife, Jane Nealand; sons, Mark Nealand, Craig (Scott) Nealand and Darryl (Norma Blanchette) Nealand; stepdaughters, Jamie (Andrew) Smith and Jodi (Neal) Robertson; six grandchildren, Krystel Nealand, Colton, Caden and Connor Robertson, and Kaleb and Sarah Smith; one great-grandson, Jakob Nealand; and his beloved cat, Princess Katie Lynn.
