BONNERS FERRY — A 61-year-old Naples man charged with second-degree murder will undergo a competency evaluation before entering a plea on the charge of second-degree murder.

John Funkhouser, Naples, is charged with in the shooting death of  43-year-old Anna Old, also of Naples.

Funkhouser remains in the Boundary County Jail on a $1 million bond. According to court records, Funkhouser’s public defender Serra Woods, requested the preliminary hearing be postponed so the defendant can undergo a competency evaluation.

The preliminary hearing will be scheduled at a later date.

If convicted, Funkhouser faces 10 years to life in prison.

According to court records, Funkhouser called 911 on Friday, Nov. 4 and told dispatchers  he wanted to report a murder. He then told the dispatcher he shot and killed Old in the Deep Creek Loop home they shared.

According to reports, sheriff’s deputies arrived at the home and found Old who appeared to have been dead for some time. She had a wound that appeared consistent with Funkhouser’s statement that he’d shot her once in the back of the head.

“She had been dead for an undetermined amount of time when we arrived on scene,” said Rich Stephens, Boundary County Chief Deputy Sheriff. “A single gun shot is what killed her.”

Funkhouser, according to reports, told both deputies and later an Idaho State Police investigator that he had he shot Old and he was taken into custody without incident.
