ENAVILLE - The annual Turkey Trot at the Snake Pit is scheduled at 8:30 Thanksgiving morning.

Started in 1978, the fun run is more about camaraderie, family and friends than it is about racing and competing for first place. Participants can walk or run some or all of the five-mile course on the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes.

There is no official starting or finish line, and don't expect any medals or ribbons, either.

Last year, about 100 kids, parents and grandparents and a few dogs joined the event that continues to have a strong following with locals looking for a holiday dash.

Those planning to join the fun are asked to bring $2 to help cover the cost of cinnamon rolls, hot chocolate and orange juice that's provided to everyone.

Turkey Trotters are also encouraged to bring a small item such as a bottle or wine or cookies that will be given away in a prize drawing when the running is done.

The Snake Pit, owned by Joe and Rose Mary Peak, is about 25 miles east of Coeur d'Alene. Take Exit 43 off Interstate 90 and go east on Coeur d'Alene River Road about a mile.

It’s estimated that only about 20% of area households can afford to buy a home.
