Program assists military families

There's a way to thank local military families in need at Christmas.
The Disabled American Veterans, Fort Sherman Chapter 9, and its auxiliary are gearing up for its program to give a hand up to children of the National Guard, Reserves, active duty and veterans who are in distress.
"Some people say they want to do something for the Guard or veterans," said Bob Hunt, who is helping organize the project. "This is a chance to do something concrete for local men and women who have served us all."
Hunt said about 20 families with 70 children have indicated a need for help through local veterans' representatives this year. Parents provide gift ideas for their kids.
Some of the soldiers and veterans have been injured, are going through divorce, post-traumatic stress disorder, are out of work, or have other issues. The local Guard unit recently completed a year-long mission to Iraq.
"Some are really going through a tough time," Hunt said. "Three of the families told me to remove them from the list as they felt they are doing all right."
The program purchases toys for kids and provides families with Christmas snacks. Families in the greatest need will receive a gift card for groceries or other necessary items.
"We used to buy meals, but we realized we were duplicating other veterans' groups," Hunt said. "This is so parents don't have to spend money on Christmas or as much and it frees up money for rent or food."
Hunt said last year one office party, rather than exchange gifts, brought in toys for the DAV.
Last year the program raised $9,500. In one case, it helped pay one month worth of rent for a mom.
"We spent all but $3 of the amount raised," Hunt said. "Every penny that comes in goes toward the project and there's no overhead (due to the all-volunteer effort)."
Tax-deductible donations should be sent to: DAV 9, c/o Robert B. Hunt, 2536 W. Falling Star Loop, Post Falls, ID 83854-9808. Donors will be mailed a receipt for their taxes.
Donations should be mailed by Dec. 15. Gifts will be delivered to the families the week of Christmas.
"It's quite the experience," Hunt said.
