Guice guides Lake City in opener

COEUR d'ALENE - Sophomore post Kyle Guice had nine points, 11 rebounds and seven blocked shots as the Lake City Timberwolves beat the Wenatchee Panthers 40-32 in the nonleague opener for both schools on Saturday at Lake City High.

"For an opener, our defense played really well," Lake City assistant coach Kelly Reed said. "Both teams had some opening-game jitters, but we were able to control the tempo. Defensively, we were pleased with how they played for a first game."

Bobby Traverse and Justin Pratt had eight points apiece for Lake City, which hosts Gonzaga Prep on Tuesday.

COEUR d'ALENE - Senior point guard Jasmyn Smith led three Timberwolves in double figures with 18 points in a nonleague win over the visiting Panthers.

Guards Jansen Butler added 16 points and Hailey Jackson had 15 points for Lake City (2-1), which shot 25 of 33 from the free throw line.

"I thought we played extremely well, especially in the second half," Lake City coach Royce Johnston said. "We were a lot more confident playing at home and our guards were exceptional. We made some mistakes in the first half defensively, but we got it together in the second half and made our free throws when it counted."

Amber Hawkes and Brittany Gay had five rebounds apiece for Lake City, which shot 11 of 12 from the foul line in the fourth quarter.

Lexxi Hallberg scored 15 points for Wenatchee in its season opener.

Lake City travels to University High in Spokane on Wednesday.
