Beware the burglars

You aren't the only one who can hear the echoes of cash registers ringing.

'Tis holiday shopping season, and a burglar near you is almost certainly paying attention, too.

It seems that the longer the economy remains depressed, the more brazen thieves are becoming. Not only has the number of burglaries in the area spiked in recent weeks, but some of the crimes are being committed in broad daylight. And now, with families stocking up on Christmas gifts and some packages being left on porches, it's conceivable targets will become even more irresistible.

So what can you do?

• Protect yourself. Make sure your home is secure, with all doors and windows locked even if you plan to be gone only briefly. (We have not received reports of anybody gaining access to homes via the chimney, but that could change Dec. 24.)

• Some anti-burglary experts also recommend homeowners breaking up routines from time to time. Predictability can be your enemy.

• Remain alert, not just for your property, but for your neighbors'. Local law enforcement officials are encouraging residents to keep an eye out for vehicles "cruising" their neighborhoods or following delivery trucks around neighborhoods. These are issues that should be addressed by neighborhood blockwatch groups. If your neighborhood does not have a blockwatch, call your city's police department to find out how to form one. Coeur d'Alene Police Department - 769-2320; Post Falls Police Department - 773-3517; Rathdrum Police Department - 687-0711; Kootenai County Sheriff's Office - 446-1300.

• Don't take chances. If you see suspicious activity at your home or at a neighbor's - even in broad daylight - call 911 and let the experts sort it out.
