North Idaho to host conference rival CSI today

COEUR d'ALENE - The 11th ranked North Idaho Cardinal volleyball team will open their home schedule against the third-ranked Southern Idaho Golden Eagles today in a Scenic West Athletic Conference match at Christianson Gymnasium starting at 1 p.m.

NIC (12-6, 1-1 SWAC) opened SWAC play last weekend with a five-game loss at Salt Lake, but rebounded to beat Snow College in five.

CSI (15-5, 2-0) swept Salt Lake and Snow in four games each. Freshman right side hitter Liene Mellupe tore her ACL in her right knee during CSI's match at Snow last Friday and will miss the remainder of the season.

Hansen no longer with Eastern coaching staff

Chris Hansen, the running backs coach for Eastern Washington, is no longer with the coaching staff, head coach Beau Baldwin announced.

Hansen has been part of the EWU program from a total of 13 years since the mid-1980s, and in recent years had coached running backs (2009-10), tight ends (2008) and cornerbacks (2003-07).

A 1979 graduate of Liberty High in Spangle, he received his bachelor's degree from Eastern in secondary education in 1991. He received his master's degree from Gonzaga in 1996, and then returned to Eastern in 2002 as a volunteer assistant coach.

Karstetter named semifinalist for William Campbell Trophy

DALLAS - Washington State senior wide receiver Jared Karstetter has been named a semifinalist for the 2011 William V. Campbell Trophy and candidate for The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame national scholar-athlete awards.

The Spokane native is a 2010 Capital One Academic All-District VIII first team and a three-year starter for the Cougars and had a 3.61 grade point average, while majoring in zoology, with plans to attend dental school when his football career ends.

Karstetter was also named a candidate for the Lowe's Senior Class Award in August.

Harrell, Franks to join Shock coaching staff

Former Spokane Shock players Clay Harrell and Stanley Franks have been added to the coaching staff.

Harrell will coach the offensive and defensive line, while Franks will be the defensive back coach, Shock coach Andy Olson announced.

Harrell spent the last two years of his five-year career in Spokane, where he accumulated 129 yards with eight touchdowns and played as a fullback, offensive lineman and defensive lineman.

Franks, who also played at Idaho, led the team in tackles with 97.5 during the team's championship season in 2009, with eight interceptions.

In addition to Franks and Harrell, Olson's staff will include assistant head coach Travis Crusenberry, who will be the defensive coordinator. Olson will coach the offense and special teams.

Naughton joins staff at Washington State

PULLMAN - Michael Naughton has joined the Washington State baseball coaching staff as a volunteer coach, manager Donnie Marbut announced.

Naughton was the head coach at Tacoma Community College from 2002-05 and was named the NWAACC coach of the year for the West Division in 2003. He was an assistant for current Cougar pitching coach Gregg Swenson from 1999-2001 at Tacoma CC.
