Timberlake pounds Priest River in IML opener

PRIEST RIVER - Zach Ward broke touchdown runs of 70 and 46 yards for Timberlake, which gained 368 yards on the ground and beat Priest River 63-6 in the Intermountain League opener for both teams Friday night.

Quarterback Brian Cronnelly went 6 for 8 passing with two touchdowns and 83 yards through the air.

"We had a bye last week, so it's been a long two weeks and the kids were ready to play," Timberlake coach Roy Albertson said. "I thought we played well on all three phases of the game tonight and it was a good team effort overall."

Running back Devin Smith carried the ball 11 times for 107 yards for the Tigers (3-2), who host St. Maries on Friday.

Cameron Riley completed 14 of 29 passes for 108 yards and a touchdown for Priest River, which netted minus-4 rushing yards.

"We didn't have an answer for anything out there tonight," Spartan coach Mike McMahon said. "But I commend the kids for giving everything they had. They weren't about to quit."

Priest River (0-5) hosts Chewelah on Friday.

Luke Feasline passed for one score and ran for another for St. Maries (1-5, 0-2), which travels to Timberlake next Friday. Feasline passed for 315 yards. Ashton Stephenson rushed for 80 yards and caught five passes for 61 yards.

PLUMMER - Sophomore Brandon Gauthier and senior Zach Cook, both reserves, made the most of their extended playing time in the Knights' victory over the Wampus Cats in North Star League play.

Gauthier rushed for 58 yards on nine carries, including a 30-yard touchdown in a 32-point first quarter for Lakeside (5-1, 4-1 NSL). Cook had two sacks and two tackles for loss.

Jeremy Stivers scored on both of his carries for the Knights, who totals 343 yards - 271 on the ground - in the game called early in the third quarter on the 45-point rule.

Lakeside plays at Kootenai next Friday.

COEUR d'ALENE - Shawn Montee rushed for 95 yards and three touchdowns, and the Viking junior varsity improved to 6-0 with the victory over the varsity team from 2A Kamiah (3-2).

Gunnar Amos completed 15 of 24 passes for 154 yards for the Vikings. He also rushed for 79 yards.

Chase Blakely caught five passes for 42 yards, and Montee had three catches for 56 yards.

ST. MARIES - Christian Guzman and Taylor VanLeuven scored late in each half for the visiting Timberwolves, who beat the Lumberjacks 3-0 at home last week.

"The last time they totally dominated; we played more in the midfield this time," St. Maries coach Chris Renaldo said.

St. Maries (0-13) plays host to Bonners Ferry today at 1 p.m.
