Ribbon cutting benefits Boys and Girls
Nils Rosdahl | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 13 years, 8 months AGO
The celebration will be for Love's Travel Stop, which will be the beneficiary in the long run, but the short-run recipient will be the Boys and Girls Club of Kootenai County.
This group will receive $2,000 at the ribbon-cutting noon Monday at Love's off I-90's Exit 2. Participants will include the Post Falls Chamber of Commerce, City Council members, Mayor Clay Larkin, City Administrator Eric Keck and Love's District Manager Shawn Baker and General Manager Alan Merha.
Open 24 hours daily, the new Love's includes the company convenience store, gas pumps and tire shop and a Carl's Jr. restaurant.
Starting in 1964 with its headquarters in Oklahoma City, Love's has 270 locations and 100 tire-care centers in 39 states and grows by about 20 stores a year. Check www.loves.com. Locally phone 773-4577.
New Subway set for Landings area
Adding to its growth as the world's largest fast-food chain, a new Subway is planned for The Landings area at the southwest corner of Prairie Avenue at Atlas Road.
The 1,500-square-foot store will offer the usual Subway menu with breakfast, personal pizzas and catering. Travis Haagen will manage about 10 employees from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily and opening in November. Owners are Jerry Jensen and Gary Turnidge.
The interesting Subway website (www.subway.com) tells how a 17-year-old lad hoping to go to college and medical school convinced a doctor to help him start a sandwich shop in 1965. With its headquarters in Milford, Conn., Subway has more than 35,340 outlets, including 14 in North Idaho, in 98 countries. Locally, phone 762-7778.

Here's this week's tantalizing tidbits
• The details on the new Riverstone building between the pond and river should be in this space next week.
• The Basement Ping Pong and Johnny Retro business at 802 N. Fourth St. has closed.
• Whine of the Week: People who don't take down their old yard/garage sale signs should pay a littering fine.
• Here's this week's style guide - a birth announcement. Max Henry Edwin Jasmin was born Sept. 24, 2011, (notice the punctuation) in Kootenai Medical Center to Cory and Todd Jasmin of Coeur d'Alene. He weighed 9 pounds, 4 ounces, is 22 inches and joins Eliza, 8, and Addy, 2 (dimensions and ages are always in numerals unless the first word of a sentence). Grandparents are Ed and Bobbi Jasmin of Helena, Mont., (the state is in commas and not the post office abbreviation, unfortunately) and Nils and Mary Rosdahl of Coeur d'Alene. With lots of blond ("blonde" is a female noun), he's pretty cute.
• The McEuen Field "improvements" are integral in the races for Coeur d'Alene City Council members next month. Except for the small playground and a few ball games, the park is hardly used so many of the proposed improvements are good ideas. I'd recommend a compromise including a public advisory (not determinant) vote, keeping the Freedom Tree and really examining the Front Street parking structure proposal. Two things to consider: It would separate Sherman Avenue from McEuen, and several parking lots could be north of Sherman and south of City Hall. The ball fields, boat ramp and waterfront parking lot can be moved elsewhere. Leave Tubbs Hill alone except for improving the Third Street access for handicapped and strollers.
