DESERT AIRE - Cozy Comforts of South Grant County has completed its 4,000th blanket for children in crisis, and is starting to gather items for its annual Christmas Bazaar.
Cozy Comforts, made up of 20-25 women who make blankets, meets on Fridays from noon to 3 p.m. at the Sagebrush Senior Center. The blankets are distributed to agencies - police, sheriff, fire departments, social services, school - that deal with children in crisis. They help the children with their emotional adjustments.
Cozy Comforts, which was founded by Desert Aire resident Barbara J. Walters, has been making blankets since March of 2008.
"That's a lot of blankets," said current President Diane Hanson. "It's quite a milestone."
Hanson noted that, while it continues to produce blankets, Cozy Comforts now turns its attention to the annual Christmas Bazaar. It will be held at Sagebrush on Saturday, Dec. 3. It is the organization's biggest fund-raiser of the year.
"All of the proceeds go to the children's blankets," Hanson said.
The bazaar includes a soup lunch for $3. The sale items include baked goods, snacks, popcorn products, candies and gift ideas.
"We have gifts in a jar," Hanson said.
There will be a silent auction and raffles. Items are being sought for both. Two significant items last year were a new mountain bike and a doll house made by one of the members.
Already planned for this year are Afghans, a Christmas quilt and a frog quilt.
"I'm making a really cute giraffe afghan," Hanson said.
People who would like to donate items for the bazaar may call Hanson at 932-4039.
