Mary Jensen Olsen
Columbia Basin Herald | UPDATED 13 years, 3 months AGO
On 2 October 2011, our Mother left her 90 year old body, which was worn out by service, and took a giant step on her return to her Heavenly Father, who had given her physical and spiritual life.
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah on 8 February 1921, to John Henry and Eva Gardner Jensen, she grew up in Ephraim, Utah, grounded in the love of family, church, and country.
After graduation from Snow College, Mom went to LDS Nursing School, "because I wasn't good in home economics," and was in anatomy class the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor when her professor, Dr. Hashimoto, quipped, "Don't look at me, I'm Irish." She served as a Navy nurse during World War II.
On 25 November 1947, she married Lloyd Vern Olsen in the Manti LDS Temple. When the first of her five sons was born, she left nursing for a life-long career as a mother, from which she earned high marks from her children - John (Florencia) of Cayey, PR; Steven (Kathi) of Heber City, UT; Allen (Roberta) of Orem, UT; Bill (Vivian) of Greenbelt, MD; and Mark (Laurie) of Dublin, OH - her 22 grandchildren, their 7 spouses, and her 8 great-grandchildren.
While growing up, the family moved every 4-5 years because of Dad's work with the Utah-Idaho Sugar Co., establishing new homes and friendships in Idaho Falls, ID; Salt Lake City, UT; and Moses Lake and Yakima, WA. Wherever she lived, Mom found opportunities to serve her beloved LDS Church, mostly in the Primary and Relief Society organizations, her community at polling booths on election days, and her neighbors with loaves of homemade bread, faithful companionship, and periodic first aid. Years of service in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple and for LDS Humanitarian Services were especially rewarding.
She was preceded in death by our Dad, a grandson Gabrial Prado, her brothers, Max and Richard Jensen, her sisters-in-law Maureen and Merna Jensen, and several of Dad's siblings and their spouses. In addition to her descendants, she is survived by a brother Robert (Lola) Jensen; and in- laws LaNon Jensen, Ralph and Vanonna Olsen, Helen Celestre, Cecil Olsen, and Rheta Cluff.
Her family expresses deep appreciation to the staff of Seville Retirement Community in Orem, UT, her home for the past 5 years, as well as her caregivers, Envision Hospice.
A visitation will be held at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary, 495 S. State, Orem, UT, on Friday, 7 October, from 6:00-8:00PM and Saturday, 8 October from 9:00-9:45AM prior to the funeral at 10:00AM at the mortuary. Interment at the Ephraim City Cemetery on Saturday, 1:00PM with military rites provided by the American Legion. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a contribution to Canary Garden: a Center for Grieving Families, a charity in Utah County established by her daughter-in-law, Vivian Olsen, for families who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Its mailing address is P.O. Box 2133, Orem, UT, 84059-2133. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sundbergolpinmortuary.com.
