REC power outage decreases production

MOSES LAKE - After a power outage, polysilicon production is being restarted at Moses Lake's REC Silicon during the next two to three weeks.
The plant lost 100 percent power Tuesday, resulting in the shutdown of all of the company's manufacturing facilities in Moses Lake, according to a company statement released Wednesday.
Power was restored at 7 p.m. Tuesday, according to Thomas Stredwick, a Grant County PUD spokesperson.
It appears the cause of the outage was weather related and likely due to dust and precipitation settling on equipment, he explained. As a result, an electric current flashed over the insulators in the substation.
The damaged equipment was replaced by line crews.
No one was injured at REC Silicon during the outage. Homes and other businesses were also without power in Moses Lake on Tuesday.
REC Silicon expects it takes between two to three weeks to bring production back to previous levels.
"As a result of this power outage, the full year 2011 polysilicon production target has been reduced from 19,000 MT (metric tons) to 18,500 MT (metric tons)," according to the company. "The incident is expected to affect FBR (fluid bed reactor) quality yield and unit cost in the fourth quarter 2011."
