Writers Corner for October 7, 2011

SEATTLE SIDEWALK LONELY

Cold eyes - faint smiles - white knuckles,

good morning courtesies rare;

other's presence unacknowledged;

yesterday's ghosts - too many yet fear.

Here too - I walk in silent repose,

in a town not mine or yours.

For who would claim such an idiom,

and be part of this societal hell?

Darkness brings out a friendlier element;

peddlers, panhandlers, prostitutes flaunt their wares.

This so-called repulsed - this cancer of the city,

should I fear for my life?

At least, they speak.

CONSISTENCY

So consistently inconsistent,

I used to fret a bit,

Wondering why Method and Order

Had so completely avoided me.

And yet, when my scattered thoughts

Finally weave themselves into one,

I guess I'm glad they drift and roam somewhat,

As a cloud of unsettled design.

CAPTAIN JACKSON

Jackson sells second-hand surplus goods,

while living life in the Montana woods.

He believes in the American way,

from distant time to the present day.

He speaks of how nearly he died,

talking with honor and a sense of pride.

He left the war leaving sight behind.

giving way to the battles of the blind.

Even though Jackson may never see,

he would do it again to keep us free.
