POST FALLS - Coming off a big win over Lake City last week, Post Falls coach Jeff Hinz warned his team about a possible trap game against Sandpoint on senior night.

They listened.

"We talked all week to our players about coming out flat," Hinz said. "That's kind of what happened after our first win over Lake City. But our players didn't. They came out and played well."

Tyson Johnson got the Trojans (6-1) going on their first drive, carrying the ball six times for 35 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown run.

Johnson finished the game with 16 carries for 168 yards and three touchdowns in the Trojans' 48-6 rout of the Bulldogs on Friday.

"Tyson is a great kid, a great football player," Hinz said. "I couldn't say anything but good things about the kid all the way around."

Following a Trojans blocked punt early in the second quarter, Marcus Colbert scored on a 2-yard run to put Post Falls up 20-0.

The run was the first of Colbert’s two touchdowns on the day. The senior, who the day before had given a verbal commitment to play basketball at Montana State, also caught a pass from backup quarterback Taylor Valente and used his speed to go 60 yards for a touchdown with 6 minutes, 30 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

Fifteen Trojan players touched the ball on offense Friday, including 10 different rushers.

“We try to distribute the football around to all of our athletes,” Hinz said. “With Marcus, Tyson, Seth, Johnny and our fullbacks ... it’s what we do.”

Valente, a senior, completed both of his passes for 72 yards and carried the ball six times for 50 yards and two touchdowns.

Valente entered the game in relief of Joey Pfennigs, who left after Post Falls secured a large lead.

“We didn’t lose a step (on offense) with Taylor,” Hinz said. “He’s a very talented quarterback and he did a tremendous job for us tonight.”

The Bulldogs (1-5) had their chance early in the second quarter when running back Sam Nitcy broke a 47-yard run to put Sandpoint inside Trojan territory down 20-0.

But two plays later, quarterback Ben Schmid and Nitcy bobbled the exchange, resulting in a fumble. The Bulldogs recovered but were unable to make up the lost yardage after a Schmid lob to the end zone fell incomplete on fourth down.

“We just aren’t playing well,” Sandpoint coach Mike Mitchell said. “The only way we’re going to get it is to run the football and have good things come from that.”

Despite a 48-0 halftime deficit, the Bulldogs showed no sign of quitting and were able to get on the board with AJ Buratto’s 19-yard touchdown run with 4:32 left in the third quarter.

“I told our guys at halftime, ‘This can be become another Coeur d’Alene (an 88-12 loss) or we have to go out and learn how to fight.’”

Post Falls is off next week before traveling to Coeur d’Alene on Oct. 21 for a big 5A Inland Empire League matchup.

“Our focus for the next two weeks is on Coeur d’Alene,” Hinz said. “And that’s who we have to get after and prepare for.”
