LACLEDE - Coeur d'Alene High cleaned house with wins by both the boys and girls teams at the William Johnson Sandpoint Invitational cross country meet held at the Riley Creek Recreational Area on Saturday.
Senior Cody Curtis kept his time under 16 minutes (15:53) on the flat 5K course set to the backdrop of the scenic Pend Oreille River, sealing the win for the Vikings, who placed four runners inside the top 10.
Ben Woolley finished fifth (16:27), Michael Dunton sixth (16:27), Andrew Regan seventh (16:29) and Kenny Colbert eighth (16:53).
"I've been injured this time of year the past two seasons, which has been frustrating," Curtis said. "So to finally have a good day on this course was exciting. It was a major goal of mine to break 16 minutes."
Curtis' time of 15:53 broke his previous personal record of 16:26 set in his freshman year.
Jake Finney finished as the runner-up after crossing the line in 16:15 for Lake City, which placed second.
Bonners Ferry finished third, led by the third-place finish of Jacob Callister, and Sandpoint finished fourth behind Sam Levora's fourth-place time of 16:18.
On the girls side it was all Coeur d'Alene, which had seven of the top eight spots and won the team title.
The top spot, however, went to Timberlake's Ashly George (18:39), who jumped past Coeur d'Alene's Josie Brown in the last 250 meters to win by just four seconds.
George contributed the late kick to "having a little left in the tank" as well as her dad "encouraging me and yelling at me to get going."
"I've been dealing with an achilles injury and didn't run for a week, so I didn't have a strategy coming in but just wanted to break 19 minutes, which I was able to do," George added.
The Vikings finished in places 2-8, led by Brown (18:43) and followed by Punky Duran (19:30), Noelle Ball (19:39), Victoria Goetz (19:47), Kara Story (19:51), Madison Sumner (20:05) and Clare Dumont (20:09).
Timberlake took second place as Rachel Ward finished ninth (20:11) and Brooke Nowlan 10th (20:11).
