COEUR d'ALENE - After battling their archrival for over 80 minutes, the Lake City Timberwolves used their heads to earn a berth into the state 5A boys soccer tournament next week.

Lake City midfielder Vincent Cavalin took a crossing pass from Kenny Randall and scored on a header from 5 feet out in the second minute of extra time to lead the host Timberwolves past the Coeur d'Alene Vikings 1-0 in a semifinal game in the 5A Region 1 tournament at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex on Tuesday.

"It was awesome," Lake City coach Chad Beadell said. "We've been practicing that play all week and Kenny (Randall) sent a great ball into Vinnie (Cavalin) for the goal."

Post Falls (15-0-2) defeated Lewiston 6-0 in the other semifinal on Tuesday at Post Falls High and will play host to Lake City (9-5-2) on Saturday at 2 p.m. to determine seeding to state Oct. 20-22 in Eagle and Meridian.

"I couldn't be happier for my program right now," Beadell said. "Coeur d'Alene has a tremendous senior class. (Adam) Borsheim is a horse and is one of the best strikers in our league. I can't wait to see what he'll do at the college level. Coeur d'Alene had a great season and this was a hard-fought game. But winning it late was definitely better than sudden death."

Of his go-ahead goal, Cavalin said that the Coeur d'Alene defense had left him uncovered long enough to find an opening.

"I knew we needed a goal," Cavalin said. "It was a perfect pass to me and I put it away. We're pumped up right now. This is just an adrenaline rush right now."

Tanner Horton had seven saves for Lake City.

"Both teams battled hard," Horton said. "Luckily, we're the ones that scored the goal. I kept thinking the worst case scenario all day today."

Rain earlier Tuesday slickened the field, and wind gusted during the game, particularly in the first half.

"It really wasn't that bad," Horton said. "The ground was just slick today, but both of us have played in worse conditions than today. It was just something about today."

Coeur d'Alene (10-5-1) had chances to score, but a first-half shot by Borsheim bounced off the crossbar.

The loss marks the first time in six years the Vikings have failed to qualify for the state tournament, and only the second time since 1998.

"I really don't know what to say right now," Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Lake said. "We're disappointed as a team, but it is what it is. Lake City played well and good luck to them at the state tournament."

First half - none. Second half - 1, LC, Vincent Cavalin (Kenny Randall), 82:00.

Shots on goal - Cd'A 7, LC 7.

Saves - Cd'A, Keagen Shillington 6; LC, Tanner Horton 7.
