Wahluke girls win one, boys drop two in cross country

MATTAWA - Wahluke's girls defeated Kiona-Benton, 15-50, but lost to Zillah, 15-42, in South Central A Conference high school cross country.

The boys didn't fare as well, falling 19-44 to Zillah and 20-38 to Ki-Be. Both groups competed at the non-league Sunfair Invitational.

At the double dual at Zillah, the Warrior girls were led by Thalia Quintero with a time of 24:07. She was followed by Maria Juarez in 24:14, Linda Achelpohl in 24:45 and Silvia Herrera in 25:25, her best ever for 5,000 meters.

The boys were led by Jorge Lopez's best effort of the year, a time of 18:03 for the 5,000 meters. Jose Espindola broke 20 minutes for the first time, clocking 19:52. Jonathan just missed that mark at 20:08.

At the Sunfair, held in Yakima, Achelpohl highlighted the efforts by the girls with a run of 23:7 in the first wave of varsity girls. Mariela Nava ran her first race ever and clocked 29:43.

For the boys, Espindola clocked 20:19 in upper level competition. Gerardo Herrera turned in a time of 13:12 in the freshman race over two miles.
