MATTAWA - Injuries last Friday night may have ended any hopes Wahluke High School had of making the class A state high school football playoffs.
River View took advantage of the wounded Warriors for a 27-0 South Central A Conference East victory. The Panthers improved to 3-1 in league and 5-1 overall. Wahluke fell to 1-2, 3-3.
Things will only get tougher for Wahluke this Friday. It will take on co-league leading and No. 4-ranked Connell (5-1, 3-0).
Whether star running back Francisco Cuevas will be back is in question. Principal Jeff Pietla said Sunday he hadn't seen a report from a doctor's examination.
Cuevas, who averages more than 20 carries and more than 100 yards per game, left Friday's game after four carries and 12 yards.
Also in question will be quarterback Jared Sabin's effectiveness. He was hurt early in the game and was limited to handoffs and passes, and he was unable to play on defense.
Sabin completed four of 16 pass attempts for 60 yards and was intercepted three times.
The leading rushers were Ricardo Silverio with 61 yards in 11 carries and Jonathan Abarca with 50 yards on nine carries.
