KHS: Worth breaking silence

Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 13 years, 3 months AGO

I always promised myself that I would remain "invisible" and never write a letter to The Press, but I can no longer remain silent.

The letters to the editor regarding the Kootenai Humane Society have disturbed me. Prior to my retirement, I worked in the corporate world. Our director was famous for saying, "do not bring me a problem without a solution." This was to eliminate the complainers who were creating problems without a basis of fact. Facts and statistics can be manipulated to fit anyone's agenda. It worked very well. Everyone who took a problem to him helped create a better work environment.

I have been to the KHS on several occasions. Each time I asked if I could walk around and look at the animals. Each time I was told, "Yes." Does this sound like an organization that has something to hide? The cages were clean and there were not multiple animals in a single cage. Does that sound like the staff is not doing their job? The staff was extremely kind and professional to me. Does that sound like a rude environment? One of the times I was there someone came in and adopted a cat. The employee who brought out the cat out was crying. She told me that she was so happy that the animal had a forever home. Does that sound like someone who does not care about or love animals? A large dog was brought in after being picked up by animal rescue. The animal had a collar and tag on - where were the owners? The dog was shaking and obviously scared. The two women who were taking the animal to a safe place were stroking him and speaking gently in an attempt to calm him down. Does that sound like someone who does not care about animals? The answer to all of these questions is NO.

The people at the KHS do a phenomenal job with limited funds and supplies. They do this with a full heart and caring attitude. May I suggest that all of the complainers sit down and write a check to the KHS or drop off needed supplies? This just might change their negative attitude into one of a warm, caring feeling. If they still want to complain, let us remember that the KHS exists because of human indifference. If all animals were spayed or neutered, cats kept inside and dogs in a safe enclosure, and animal abuse ended, we would not need the KHS. As a last thought, do not complain about a perceived problem without bringing a solution. You're only hurting the little ones who have no homes or voice, may have been subjected to abuse and look to the KHS to save their lives.

A big, heartfelt thank you to everyone who works or volunteers at the KHS. I, for one, am deeply appreciative for all you do.
