Chiefs vollyeball drops match

MOSES LAKE - The Lady Chiefs were dealt a gut-wrenching defeat in their final home match of the season last night, falling to Eisenhower in five sets, (25-19, 25-20,23-25, 25-2, 16-14).

"It was a disappointing loss, but I thought the girls played hard out there tonight," coach Amy Utter said. "It would've been great to get a win for the program and for the senior's for all they have done for the team, but we didn't. We have to put this behind us now and get ready to play Walla Walla Tuesday."

Moses Lake got out to a 5-1 lead in the first game, but the Lady Cadets came roaring back to tie the score 5-5. The Lady Chiefs, not to be outdone, went on a 20-14 run to take the set 25-19.

Game two was just as exciting as the two squads battled to a 14-14 tie mid-way through the action, but an 11-6 outburst by Moses Lake put Eisenhower away, 25-20.

It looked as though the home team was going to take the match in three sets, as momentum and fanatic student body cheer section was on their side, but Moses Lake having trouble getting serves to stay in play, dropped the game 25-23.

"Generally, we are a good serving team ... pretty consistent most of the time," Utter said. "But we struggled tonight and that was surprising."

The Chiefs had trouble getting in their set offense in the fourth game, but did manage to take an early 2-0 lead. However, Eisenhower went on a 16-8 run to go up 16-10 and rattle Moses Lake. Utter took a time out to try and settle the team and help regain its focus. The pep talked appeared to take hold as the Chiefs went on a spurt of their own to push the score to 22-19. But the Cadets would have none of it, and closed out the game 25-20.

The fifth and final set of the match was a real thriller with the lead changing hands nine times as the teams fought to a 14-14 score. But an untimely miss at the net by Sadie Nielsen, and a couple of soft hit balls by Eisenhower, found there way to the floor for a 16-14 win by the visiting team.

The loss drops the Chiefs record to 2-8 in Big 9 action.

Nielsen led the offensive attack for Moses Lake with 20 kills and 16 digs. Carina LeFave had nine kills, Kenzie Fancher finished with 40 assists, and libero Taylor Sonnenberg, recorded 19 digs.

Moses Lake hits the road the for its last two matches. First up are the Lady Blue Devils from Walla Walla.

"It's going to be a long week for us having to go to Walla Walla and then to Davis," Utter said. "If we can stay focused, I like our chances against Walla Walla and actually expect to win. But it really depends on which teams shows up ... the team that can finish or the one that can't."
