Broncos crush Rams in Mountain West debut

After just one game in the conference, No. 5 Boise State is already the biggest bully in the Mountain West.

The Broncos, an expansion target for the Big East, routed Colorado State 63-13 in their Mountain West debut Saturday at Fort Collins, Colo., behind huge games from quarterback Kellen Moore, tailback Doug Martin and wide receiver Tyler Shoemaker.

Moore threw for 338 yards and four touchdowns on 26-of-30 passing, Martin ran 20 times for 200 yards and three scores and Shoemaker caught nine passes for 180 yards and two TDs and added a 36-yard run on a fake punt that led to another score for the Broncos (6-0, 1-0).

The trio of playmakers did all of that damage in just 2? quarters before their backups finished off the Rams (3-3, 1-1).

"It just felt like we were executing like we do in practice," said Moore, who engineered six scoring drives of under two minutes in improving to 44-2 as a starter, one win shy of Colt McCoy's NCAA record.

"Tonight we were just really clicking," Shoemaker said. "I think it sets the standard for us in the Mountain West. We talked about that a lot in practice this week: as a new conference member, let them know we're here to compete."

Even before kickoff of their inaugural league game, however, there were rumblings the Broncos, who left the Western Athletic Conference after a decade of dominance, would be bolting again - this time to the reconfigured Big East. That conference could issue them a football-only invitation as soon as next week.

Boise State president Robert Kustra told The Associated Press before kickoff that the school's best option might be staying in the Mountain West, which is joining forces with Conference USA to secure a solid future in the rapidly changing college football landscape. But Kustra stressed that his top priority is to get the Broncos as close as possible to an automatic qualifying status in the BCS, so he's keeping all his options open.

"Not even the slightest" distraction, coach Chris Petersen said. "Not even kind of. The guys that are going to make the decision are going to make a great decision for Boise State. We have 100 percent confidence in that. And that's why it doesn't distract us in the slightest. We're just playing this season."

"We don't talk about it," Moore said of the Big East rumors. "We don't care about it."

Because, he said, the Broncos have their sights set squarely on mastering the Mountain West.

"We can only hope for bigger and better things," Shoemaker said, "but right now we're in our conference and we're going to do our best."

The Broncos raced out to a 35-0 lead in the first 20 minutes before the Rams gathered themselves and scored touchdowns on two trick plays.

Eastern Washington 48, Northern Colorado 27: At Cheney, Bo Levi Mitchell passed for 400 yards and three touchdowns to carry Eastern Washington to a homecoming victory over Northern Colorado.

Mitchell, who completed 28 of 39 passes, also ran for a score for the Eagles (3-4 overall, 3-2 Big Sky), who have won three straight. Seth Lobato threw for a career-high 408 yards and a touchdown for the Bears (0-7, 0-5) in a losing effort.

After Northern Colorado climbed to within 27-20 on Dave Eden's field goal late in the third quarter, Eastern Washington responded with back-to-back touchdowns in a span of 22 seconds to pull away. Mitchell sandwiched scoring passes of 12 yards to Greg Herd and 42 yards to Nicholas Edwards around T.J. Lee III's interception of Lobato to go up 41-20 with 58 seconds left in the third.

Herd's 11 receptions for 159 yards were both career highs.

Montana 30, Portland State 24: At Missoula, Montana coach Robin Pflugrad knew he had a good one in running back Jordan Canada. But he was waiting for the freshman to show everyone else what he could do.

On Saturday, Canada did just that, running for 159 yards and a touchdown to lead Montana past Portland State.

"I was hoping and praying Jordan Canada would have a breakout game," Pflugrad said. "At the half I told him that I had told the press he was going to have a breakout game and I wasn't looking very good right now."

Canada, who had one carry for a 1-yard loss in the first half, took it upon himself to make his coach look good, running for 160 yards on 13 carries in the second half, including a 75-yard romp that set up Dan Moore's game-tying touchdown late in the third quarter.

The Grizzlies (5-2, 3-1 Big Sky) rallied from a 11-point halftime deficit, starting with Canada's touchdown on a 3-yard reverse to cut Portland State's lead to 21-16 midway through the third quarter.

The Vikings (3-3, 2-2) dominated the first half with two field goals by Zach Brown and touchdown runs by Connor Kavanaugh and Cory McCaffrey.

Weber State 39, Idaho State 12: At Ogden, Utah, Mike Hoke completed only seven passes but four of them went for touchdowns as Weber State (3-3, 3-1) won its 13th straight game over border rival Idaho State (2-5, 1-4 Big Sky).

Lewis & Clark 30, Whitworth 22: At Portland, Ore., Keith Welch threw for 149 yards and one touchdown, rushed for 149 yards and two more scores, and the Pioneers (5-0, 2-0) beat Whitworth (1-5, 0-2 Northwest Conference).

Jake DeGooyer caught 12 passes for 149 yards and former Lakeland High standout Scott Carr had five tackles for Whitworth.

Carroll 30, Rocky Mountain 7: At Helena, Mont., Chance Demarais ran for 169 yards and two touchdowns, Mike Siegersma returned an interception 70 yards for another score, and No. 3 NAIA Carroll College (6-1, 5-1 Frontier Conference) beat No. 21 Rocky Mountain College (4-3, 3-3).
