Man dies, another injured in separate accidents

A Hayden man was critically injured in an early morning crash on Saturday.

The Idaho State Police reported that Brenden T. Nichols, 18, Hayden, was westbound on U.S. 12 at milepost 157 in a 2004 Jeep Liberty about 2 a.m. when he drifted across the center line into the eastbound lane. He overcorrected and lost control of the vehicle, which slid off the road, overturned and hit a rock embankment.

Nichols, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to St. Patrick's Hospital in Missoula, Mont., where he was listed in critical condition Sunday.

In a separate accident, an Auburn, Wash., man died when the car he was driving crashed near Priest River early Sunday.

According to ISP, Cameron J. Christian, 22, was westbound in a 2003 Toyota Camry on Highway 2 east of Priest River about 12:30 a.m. when he "evasively steered" for an unknown reason and overcorrected. The car slid sideways over the eastbound lane and off the road, police said. The vehicle then overturned and struck a tree.

Christian was wearing a seat belt, police said.

Toddler dies, mom's boyfriend in custody

BOISE (AP) - The Ada County coroner said an 18-month-old girl who police say suffered head trauma at the hands of her mother's boyfriend has died.

Coroner Erwin Sonnenberg said that an autopsy is planned for today. Sonnenberg on Sunday did not release the child's name or time of death.

Emergency workers were called to a Boise home on Oct. 8 after the girl was reported unconscious. Paramedics reported they called law enforcement after determining the child had suffered head trauma.

Police said 21-year-old Jordan Everhart was babysitting the girl and his explanation for how she was hurt did not match the injuries.

Everhart was being held in the Ada County Jail after being charged with felony injury to a child.

A hearing is set for Oct. 25.
