Several Flathead FFA members are representing the district and state this week at the 84th Annual National FFA Convention in Indianapolis.

Flathead FFA, which represents Glacier and Flathead High School students and recent graduates, will be recognized as a top chapter.

Local FFA members will participate in competitive events, tours, leadership workshops and career shows.

After winning the state championship in the Prepared Public Speaking Career Development Event last spring, Jemma Morrow will compete against the top 50 members in the nation with her speech, “Back to School to Learn About Agricultural Education.”

Morrow is the first person in the Flathead FFA chapter’s history to advance to nationals in Prepared Public Speaking, adviser Justin Heupel said in a press release.

Morrow is a recent high school graduate. For this event she will give the speech and answer questions asked by judges.

Flathead FFA students Kelsey Ovik, Tyler Burnett, Shea Schroeder and Levi Schmid will compete in the Forestry Career Development Event.

Heupel said Sean Bohannan, another Flathead FFA member and recent high school graduate, is one of four national finalists to compete for the Forest Management and Products proficiency award.

This is the first time a Flathead FFA member was chosen as a national finalist, Heupel said. Bohannan will be awarded a plaque and $500. The national winner will receive an additional $500.

Students earn proficiency awards by conducting outstanding work-based  programs.

Bohannan began by working for his father, a professional forester. He volunteered with West Valley Fire Department and was hired by the U.S. Forest Service. Bohannan has fought wildfires around the West and is working to take over his father’s forest management business.

Another highlight at the convention will be American FFA Degree recipient Dominic Eickert.

The degree is given to top National FFA Organization members and awarded to about .5 percent of FFA members yearly.
