They didn't have their regular coaches, but it didn't matter. The Columbia Falls girls soccer team hammered Loyola Sacred Heart 13-0 in the first round of the state Class A playoffs at home Oct. 15.
Coach Greg Trenerry and his daughter, Nicolette Bales, who is the assistant coach, were gone due to a death in the family. So boys coach Peter Browne and his assistant, Brian Crandell, filled in.
Browne didn't have to do much steering. Danielle Delventhal and McKenzie Kiser each had five goals as the Wildkats dismantled Loyola.
"It wasn't the same not having (coach Trenerry) here," Delventhal said. "(But) coach Browne did a good job, and we pulled it together."
"We figured out what we needed to do," Kiser said.
The duo scored early and often.
Delventhal said the key was to not take Loyola for granted.
"We came out not expecting it to be easy," she said.
Delventhal now has 30 goals on the year, while Kiser has 27.
Cedar Jordt, Katie Donner and Tayler Gress also scored. The Kats go on the road against Billings Central this Saturday in the second round of the playoffs. Trenerry and his daughter will be back to coach, and the competition will be much stiffer.
Delventhal and Kiser said they expect a hard week of practice ahead. Central, the top seed in the east, has won the last three state Class A titles.
Both teams have just one loss. The Kats are 11-1-1 now. Central is 12-1. Central beat Corvallis 4-0 to advance to the semifinals.
If Columbia Falls wins, they'll host the state championship game at home.
That would be a first.
The winner of the Hamilton-Whitefish game will advance from the other side of the bracket. Potentially, the state championship game could feature a Whitefish-Columbia Falls showdown.
