CHARTER: Music to education's ears

We attended the Fall Music Festival at Charter Academy last week and were disappointed when I didn't see anything about it in The Press. It was a delight to be there. The program included both the middle school band and choir. Usually these events are not much to write about, but people should tune in to what is going on at Charter.

It was a black tie affair for students. Choir teacher, Shiela Wayman, did a fantastic job connecting with students and bringing out their best. She may have put on her "bling," but it was the sparkle in the eyes of students that really dazzled the crowd. These middle-schoolers were engaged, respectful, attentive and a joy to others - qualities that are valued in our community. Music is a required course for sixth-graders and after only six weeks of school it is apparent that not only are the students participating, they are having fun learning. Importantly and by the looks of the crowd, they have the full support of parents and family members.

We enjoyed music selections ranging from an African marching song to patriotic classics. Band teacher, Mr. Harrison, said he'd been teaching music for eight years, and "I finally found where I belong." He's not alone... it looks like the kids are happy he's there too!

There are a lot of discussions regarding local options for advanced learning programs. District 271 is already discussing the need to build schools in the northern part of the district which means future levy plans. With limited funding options it looks more like a dream then a vision.

In the meantime, charter schools offer new options without levies. Coeur d'Alene already has a middle and high school in the north... one with national recognition, high graduation rates and academic excellence. It looks like the best "school choice" option is Charter! Can't wait to hear what they have planned for their Christmas Music Festival!
