MOSES LAKE - A Moses Lake man kidnapped his roommate's two young boys Thursday night, briefly fleeing on foot before he was caught and the children returned safely to their mother.

Grant County Sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a man yelling in the Larson housing area, north of the Moses Lake city limits at about 11 p.m., according to Grant County Undersheriff Dave Ponozzo.

Shane J. Soares, 30, Moses Lake, reportedly said he was yelling and acting out because "the Lord told him to," but deputies had no probable cause to arrest him for any crime nor to detain him for a mental health evaluation and Soares was released, Ponozzo stated.

About an hour later a woman called 9-1-1 to report Soares, who was her roommate, had just kidnapped her two boys, ages 3 and 4.

Robinson reportedly told dispatchers Soares entered the boys' bedroom and woke them up before taking one child under each arm and fleeing on foot towards Patton Boulevard.

He was caught after a short foot chase and the boys were returned to their mother unharmed.

Soares was arrested on suspicion of two counts of second degree kidnapping and booked into the Grant County Jail, Ponozzo stated.

A county drug recognition expert determined Soares allegedly appeared to be under the influence of an unknown drug, he added.
