WENATCHEE, Wash. - The Wenatchee Wild earned a point Friday but fell in a shootout to the Kenai River Brown Bears at the Town Toyota Center, 3-2.

Alex Frere put the Brown Bears on top, 1-0, with 1:48 remaining in the first period. With the Wild on a power play, Frere came up with a turnover at the Kenai River Blue line and scored on a breakaway on his backhand.

Frere's goal broke up Robert Nichols' (Dallas, Texas) franchise record of consecutive time played without allowing a goal, which was halted at 161 minutes and 30 seconds.

Wild forward Ben Carey (Centennial, Colo.) notched the equalizer 80 seconds into the second stanza when he lit the light on a backhander of his own from the bottom of the far faceoff circle, beating netminder Austin Severson 5-hole.

In the third, Jesse Ramsey got behind the Wild defense and beat Nichols one-on-one with a backhander. Shawn Pauly (Bellingham, Wash.) knotted the score, 2-2, at the 7:14 mark when he punched in a rebound on his backhand off of Sam Johnson's (Dallas, Texas) shot from the point.

Nichols made perhaps his best save of the game in overtime with his team shorthanded when he went from post-to-post to deny a short-range one-timer. In all, Nichols made 24 saves on 26 shots. Severson made 31 saves on 33 shots.

Kenai River won the game in the shootout, notching three scores on five chances. Pauly recorded Wenatchee's only marker in the shootout.

Neither team scored on the power play. Wenatchee was 0-for-7 while Kenai River was 0-for-6.

Game 2 of the weekend series between the Wild (4-4-1) and Brown Bears will begin at 7:05 p.m. Saturday.
