MOSES LAKE - Police subdued a man with non-lethal force Sunday after he allegedly fled after being caught trying to break in to a Moses Lake liquor store.

Domingo C. Alvarado, 42, Moses Lake, was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, felony eluding and resisting arrest, the police stated Thursday.

At about 6 p.m. Moses Lake police responded to a report of an attempted burglary at the state liquor store on North Stratford Road, which was closed at the time.

Witnesses reportedly provided a description of the suspect's vehicle, a 1987 Honda Accord. It was stopped a short time later by a Moses Lake police officer.

An apparently intoxicated Alvarado fled in the vehicle, the report stated, continuing north on Stratford before being stopped again and then once more fleeing north.

Police were in pursuit as Alvarado reportedly failed to negotiate a turn onto westbound Road 10 Northeast, crashing into the ditch before regaining control and continuing on Road 10.

He reportedly stopped the vehicle and fled on foot while carrying a plastic bag with a heavy, long object inside of it. Alvarado allegedly refused to comply with commands to stop, according to the police.

The officer then reportedly shot Alvarado's lower body with four beanbag rounds fired from a shotgun before Alvarado entered a residence.

Other Moses Lake officers and Grant County sheriff's deputies arrived and the residence was contained.

Alvarado reportedly surrendered and was transported for examination and treatment of contusions received from the beanbag projectiles.

He was processed for DUI at Samaritan Hospital before being released and transported to the Grant County Jail.

Moses Lake Police Capt. Dave Ruffin said he wasn't certain if the residence Alvarado entered, before being arrested, was his own, although the suspect does live on Road 10 Northeast.

Ruffin also said he was unsure if police were able to determine what was in the plastic bag Alvarado was carrying.

Moses Lake police typically deploy less-than-lethal force anywhere from 10 to 20 times per year, Ruffin said. Tasers are the most common method, but pepper spray and beanbag projectiles are also utilized in certain situations.

Special shotguns outfitted with orange stocks are for less-than-lethal use and never used to shoot live rounds, he added.
