ROYAL CITY - After struggling against themselves for an entire game and two overtimes, Royal's girls won a shootout to defeat Granger, 1-0, in high school soccer last week.

Granger missed three attempts in the shootout. Three of four Royal girls - Maria Garcia, Gladys Meza and Angie DeLaRosa - were successful.

"The girls played well, creating a slew of chances, but they simply could not force the ball into the net," coach Jens Jensen said. "It was a frustrating afternoon for everyone."

The Royal girls had 15 shots, seven on goal. Granger was one-and-one.

"All said and done, it is a victory, and we will take it," Jensen said.

Earlier last week, Royal lost to LaSalle, 7-1. The Lightning are a state caliber squad and tough to beat. The score was tied at 1-1 on a goal by Cynthia Cid.

"When our girls scored, it felt like they'd won a national championship," Jensen said.

Royal has a home match with Highland today.
